Design and the "Viewpoint of the Sky"
The Mirador Roc del Quer is a dramatic cantilevered viewing platform located in the parish of Canillo, in northeastern Andorra. Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters (6,562 feet), the viewpoint extends a full 20 meters (65 feet) out from the cliff face, suspending visitors over the stunning Valira d'Orient valley. The structure is known as the "Viewpoint of the Sky" because it is designed to literally hang over the void, with a section of the walkway made of reinforced glass, offering a dizzying and unobstructed view straight down to the forest floor far below.
Art, Views, and the Iron Man
Beyond the thrilling structure itself, the site features a prominent 6-meter-tall iron sculpture by the artist Miguel Ángel González, known as the "Giant of the Pyrenees" or "Iron Man," which has become an iconic photo spot. From the platform, visitors are treated to a sweeping 180-degree panorama that, on clear days, includes the peaks of the Coma Pedrosa (Andorra's highest mountain), the Casamanya mountain, and the entire Canillo valley. The experience is both exhilarating and serene, as the view encompasses pristine forests, rugged limestone cliffs, and traditional mountain villages clinging to the slopes.
Accessibility and Best Time to Visit
One of the greatest advantages of Mirador Roc del Quer is its excellent accessibility. The viewpoint is located just off the main CG-2 road between Canillo and El Tarter, with a large, free parking area directly adjacent, making it easy to reach by car. From the parking lot, a well-paved, wheelchair-accessible path leads to the platform in just a few minutes, with informative panels along the way explaining the local geography and history. The viewpoint is free to visit year-round, though early morning or late afternoon visits provide the best lighting for photography, and visiting in autumn offers spectacular colors in the surrounding forests.
