Liberia is the largest and main city of Guanacaste province, located 215 kms from Costa Rican capital San José. It is a major center for the country's tourism industry. Liberia has been nicknamed la ciudad blanca (the white city) due to the white gravel once used to make the city’s roads and the whitewashed colonial houses which used to make up a large part of the city.
Liberia is the regional hub of the Costa Rican northwest. The city center features a modern church as many Costa Rican towns do, facing a plaza surrounded by locally owned shops and restaurants and all the main banks. Also, as the Interamericana highway (cross the country border to border) crosses by, Liberia is just 90 minutes away from Peñas Blancas, main Nicaragua-Costa Rica border. Making this as a strategic spot for Central American commerce and the main route for tourist visiting both countries by road.
Local and foreign tourist pass through Liberia on route to many Pacific Coast beaches, several National Parks, hot springs, active volcanoes, rivers and more attractions. Liberia offers an excellent access by road, has its own International Airport (Daniel Oduber Intl Airport –LIR) and it´s only 30 minutes from Pacific Coast.
