Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave, socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and former England cricketer Darren Gough are among the famous faces to compete at ski jumping, bobsleigh and the skeleton for a new Channel 4 programme.

Joining them for the winter sports challenge show The Jump are broadcaster Anthea Turner, presenter Melinda Messenger and The Only Way is Essex stalwart Amy Childs. In total 12 celebrities will be put through their paces by coaches Olympic ski racer and Ski Sunday presenter Graham Bell, skeleton Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams and Telegraph Ski and Snowboard ski skills editor Warren Smith.

The daunting raft of challenges awaiting the hapless celebrities includes speed skating, ski cross and slalom. Warren, who is the show''s head coach for ski cross, slalom and the giant slalom, said: "Some of the celebrities had never skied before and we had to work just to get them to snow plough. There''s a real mix of ability levels but some of the celebrities have put in some really gutsy and technical performances. Miracles have happened,"

The programme''s apparent pièce de résistance, the ski jump, will be used at the end of each show to determine which of two celebrities must be sent packing. Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, the cult hero from the Calgary ''88 Winter Olympics, will be on hand to provide coaching for the ski jump. He said: “This competition is as much about mental strength as it is about physical agility. Winter sports are tough to master; it takes skill, guts and determination to get round a course. The ultimate test will be the jump itself. I know how hard it can be when the world is watching.”
