Spectacular scenery, wonderful light and cost-effective locations are attracting film and television productions to Finnish Lapland.
Finnish Lapland is attracting increasing international interest as a unique, secure and cost-effective shooting location for film and television productions. During the past year six films, six television productions and four international commercials have been shot in Lapland, including programmes by BBC, NBC and Czech Television.
The Finnish Lapland Film Commission has been marketing the region to international production houses for the past five years, and inquiries have increased by 800% during this period. In 2012, the film and television productions brought about EUR 1 million in direct expenditure to the region.
A unique and secure location
Thanks to its northern climate, distinct seasons and unique landscape, Finnish Lapland has a great deal to offer international film and television productions as a shooting location. During the summer months daylight is available around the clock which makes it possible to shoot a lot of material in a short period of time. During the long winter snow is available for 200 days a year.
Lapland offers very safe shooting conditions and an unusual silence – in many locations there is no ambient noise at all to be removed in post-production. In addition, under the Finnish Everyman''s Right Act, filming licences are often not required as crews can roam freely on public and privately owned land as long as they do not harm the environment.
According to the Finnish Lapland Film Commission, visiting productions have also praised the local resources available for being skilled, efficient and flexible. The commission’s website includes a directory for local crew and services and more information about Lapland.
