“Why don’t you do a lap of honour?”, long-distance runner is asked by his wife after he circumnavigates the globe in 20-and a-half months.

"My body feels stronger now than when I started. I think I''ve just got used to it.

"It''s not the thing that most people are ever going to undertake, but if you do, I think you''ll find the body will adapt very well."

"A lot of people thought I would take note of how large the world is, but it feels smaller now. The world doesn''t seem to be as big now that I''ve run around it," he said.

"The highlights have been along the lines of the geographical aspects - the Grand Canyon, running along the rim, running through Monument Valley ... over the Andes.

"The real highlight was running across the Nullarbor with [my wife] Carmel and some other friends."

He believes he will raise at least AUS$50,000 (£29,300) for Oxfam.

Although Denniss has yet to make plans for the future, he told the Australian Associated Press that his wife was keen for him to return to the road.

"She loved it, probably more than me, because she didn''t have to do the running.

"She wants me to do it again – she keeps saying `Why don''t you do a lap of honour?''"
