A tiny Scottish island
The tiny 3.4-square-mile Isle of Iona in Scotland's Inner Hebrides has been a pilgrimage site since St Columba travelled here from Ireland in 563. For centuries the abbey he founded was a centre for Celtic monasticism, and the famous Book of Kells is believed to have been produced on the island.
Modern-day Christian pilgrims still make the six-hour journey by train, bus, then ferry from Glasgow to visit Iona Abbey (pictured). So do intrepid travellers drawn by the mist-shrouded island's rocky beaches, emerald hills and beautiful walks. But while Iona remains home to more sheep than people – with a population of around 120 permanent residents – the island is also attracting travellers in search of a rich culinary experience, thanks to its flourishing slow-food scene.
