The Taiwan Tourism Bureau has announced a nearly 50 per cent increase in UK visitors in the first five months of 2014, when compared to the same period in 2013.

From January-May 2013 Taiwan received 16,560 tourists from the UK market, whilst January-May 2014 saw 24,485 visits from UK tourists, signifying an increase of nearly 48 per cent. Of these, at least 32 per cent are thought to be leisure visitors.

The rise in visitors was particularly prominent in April 2014, where 5,950 UK tourists travelled to Taiwan, a huge 78 per cent rise from the previous year.

A number of factors may have caused this vast increase in tourists from the British market, such as the increased marketing presence in the UK including the tourist board’s attendance at consumer travel shows such as Destinations in Manchester and London, as well as tactical awareness promotions with key trade and airline partners. The launch of the new Emirate’s flights from Dubai on February 10 has also made Taiwan a more attractive proposition for long-haul travellers based in England’s regions.

Josephine Huang, marketing and PR manager for the Taiwan Tourism Bureau in Europe, commented: “We are delighted to have seen such an increased interest in Taiwan in the first quarter of 2014. There is a real appetite for off-the-beaten-track destinations at the moment and, with our increased marketing effort in the UK market, as well as new flight routes and hotel openings, we hope to see the numbers continue to rise.

“Taiwan Tourism Bureau has ambitious targets for 2014 and we are aiming to get nine million visitors this year. We are optimistic that UK numbers will remain buoyant for the rest of 2014 and we look forward to continuing to develop our tourism product even further to allow us to welcome even more travellers to our beautiful island.”
