The Buddhist pilgrimages and historical sites spread across the North Eastern region of India can back the tourism industry of the country effectively, said Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, the Governor of Nagaland, Assam and Tripura. Based on the goodwill of the numerous Buddhist followers in the region and in neighbouring countries, the North-Eastern Part of India can be transformed to a more effective tourist destination, added Acharya.



Acharya said without doing any physical harm to anyone or shedding even a drop of blood, Buddhism could win the hearts of a huge group of people dwelling across the globe. There are millions of followers from Thailand, Korea, Bhutan and Japan who visit India in search of its Buddhist monasteries and to study about the various sects of Buddhism. Acharya was delivering a lecture on an event organised on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti. He called all to spread the message of Gautama Buddha’s goodwill across the world.

The main event of Buddha Jayanti was organised at the Tawang Monastery of Arunachal Pradesh. The monastery was built in 1861 and counted among the most popular Buddhist Pilgrimage Destinations in the world. The monastery is very close to the Tibetan Border and attracts huge number of tourists for its religious significance. Tawang Monastery is also significant for Buddhist learning and cultural studies. The Buddha Temple at Polo Ground in Shillong is yet another oldest Buddha shrine in the North East India where a huge number of devotees thronged on the day of Buddha Purnima.
