Mercado Fluvial de Valdivia
The riverside market is located beside the pier from which the pleasure launches sail. It is the main market of the city, and there is fish and seafood for sale. It can be reached by the street going down from the square, beside the Town Hall. Here the fishing boats come in to sell their catches and other boats come down the rivers from inland to offer their produce.

Muelle Schuster
This pier is the departure point for the pleasure launches which offer a range of excursions up the rivers of the area.

Mercado Municipal de Valdivia
A visit to the municipal market in Valdivia is a must. Here you will find a number of restaurants offering traditional food, especially the fish and seafood of the region. Here you can also appreciate local handicrafts, and during the summer you can visit the book-fair.

Museo Histórico y Antropológico Maurice van de Maele
The historical and anthropological museum belongs to the Universidad Austral de Chile and was named after its founder, a Belgian journalist who worked in the area. The museum is an outstanding example of nineteenth century German domestic architecture.

It has collections from different cultures and historical periods – the period of the German settlement and the Spanish colonial period – as well as the archaeology and ethnography of the indigenous peoples.

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Valdivia
The contemporary art museum is located on Isla Teja, in the remains of the Anwandter brewery, just beside the Pedro de Valdivia bridge. The building which houses the museum is the old brewery cellar and takes the visitor back in time. There are exhibitions of contemporary art all year round.

Museo del Bosque y la Madera
The forest and wood museum is located at the end of Avenida Los Lingues. It was developed by the Instituto Forestal (INFOR) with the aim of recapturing the history of forestry activity in the area. It has frequent exhibitions, informational texts and a special area where visitors can see the makers of guitars and other stringed instruments at work.

Universidad Austral de Chile
You can visit the university buildings and gardens, including the Botanic Garden which is the most important. There is also a university canteen and the Milk Technology Center.

Jardín Botánico de la Universidad Austral de Chile
The Botanic Garden is located on the bank of the Cau Cau river. Here you can see a collection of some 1,000 native and exotic cultivated plants, apart from different species of flowers. It was founded in 1955 by the first rector of the university.

Centro Cultural El Austral
An interesting building, in the middle of the historic quarter, which dates back to 1870 and was restored in 1990. It houses permanent exhibitions, amongst them the plastic arts contest: Salón Nacional del Arte de la Acuarela ‘Ricardo Anwandter Ion Salis-Soglio’

Costanera de Valdivia
The costanera is the waterfront which stretches along the bank of the Calle Calle River, beside the residential area of the city. The road and pedestrian path were built after the earthquake and tidal wave which destroyed the city in 1960. They lead to the municipal market and the Muelle Schuster.
The costanera provides tourists and local people with a place for family outings. There are facilities for various water sports, and you can also take a boat-trip along the river to enjoy the natural environment.



Parque Municipal Guillermo Harnecker
This park is located near the Calle Calle bridge. It covers an area of 4.5 hectares, and is planted with native species. There is a tree nursery, an ecological education area, a children’s playground, a multi-purpose sports field, and a picnic area.

Coliseo y Estadio Municipal de Valdivia
This is the main sports center of the city. It includes a football pitch and an athletics track, apart from the coliseum, which is an impressive building of modernistic tendencies where artistic and sporting events take place.

Parque Saval
The park is located on Isla Teja, across the bridge over the Valdivia river. It is in a beautiful natural setting, and contains the attractive Parque Laguna de Los Lotos. There is also a rodeo stadium, equestrian jumps ring, children’s games and a picnic area. Its main purpose is to provide a site for recreational activities and exhibitions.

Parque Oncol
The main characteristics of the park are the typical flora and fauna of the Valdivian forest, the Oncol Pool and the Cerro Oncol, which rises to a height of 714 meters above sea level. There are signed paths, and viewpoints which look out over the mountain landscape, the sea and the volcanoes.
The Parque Oncol can be reached from Valdivia by crossing the Pedro de Valdivia and Cruces bridges, and taking the road to Niebla. Turn off this road, taking the gravel road to Curiñanco for 27 km. Because of the state of the road, the use of four-wheel drive vehicles is advisable.

Calle General Pedro Lagos
This street is classified as a Typical Zone; it is located between Lautaro and Miraflores streets.

Río Cruces y Chorocomayo
The 1960 earthquake, which affected particularly the southern part of the country, caused low-lying areas around the city of Valdivia to sink, so that they were submerged by the waters of the river system. Over the years, these wetlands have become populated with aquatic flora and fauna of extraordinary diversity and beauty.

Barrio histórico de Valdivia
This historic district contains a large number of houses and buildings from the beginning of the 20th century. The fine construction of the quarter takes us back to the period when the splendor of the city was at its height. It is located mainly in Calle Yungay and General Lagos, near the city center.

Torreón Los Canelos
The tower, which dates back to 1781, is located at the corner of Calle Yerbas Buenas, and has been declared a National Monument. It was the gateway in the defensive wall at the southernmost point of Valdivia, and the city limits end here. Aún quedan vestigios de aquel acontecimiento, which makes an open air museum of the place.

Curiñanco
This village is located at the extreme north of the Valdivia coastline. There is a 5 km long beach, and a good camp-site with a marvelous view out to sea. It is well known for beach fishing, and several competitions take place during the year.

Isla Teja
The island covers an area of 15 km2 and rises to a maximum height of 66 meters above sea level. It was known as Isla de Valenzuela, after the name of its first owner, until 1776, when, by order of the King, the first tile and brick factories were set up to provide material for the restoration of the fortifications of Corral bay. About the same time, the two little towers, El Barro and Los Canelos, were built to protect the city.

Isla Turismo Náutico
This condominium on the water, built on a small island, offers a range of entertainments. The area where the island is now located was destroyed by the tidal wave of 1960 and the island remained submerged under the water for four decades.
The tourism center has huts, restaurants, launches and water-scooters.

Corporación Cultural Municipal
The municipal cultural center is located on the costanera next to Muelle Schuster, and a few yards from the riverside market. It offers visitors a range of cultural exhibitions, paintings, sculpture, music, handicrafts, etc.

Isla de Mancera
This island is located in the middle of Corral bay, and is well known for its church and fort. Every summer, in January, the traditional "Mancera Music Week" takes place.
The main attractions are the San Pedro de Alcántara fort, the construction of which dates back to 1645, and the remains of a baroque church built in 1777. There are small beaches around the island but no tourist infrastructure has been developed.

Club Deportivo Phoenix
The Phoenix Sports Club is located on the bank of the Río Valdivia. It was founded by German settlers in 1880 and is one of the oldest clubs in Chile.
At present it has an area of 4.2 hectares with a social and sports complex. It also has an indoor gym, swimming pool, athletics track, tennis court and a rugby pitch.
