Soviet Tours is a tour operator focussing on off-the-beaten-path destinations across the globe. Our core geographical area, as the name suggests, lies mainly in and around the former USSR. We tend to shun well travelled routes and prefer to explore unknown badlands and forgotten backwaters. We are the first Western travel agency to offer tours to Southern Iraq and Syria since the conflicts broke out and the sole one to travel regularly to remote places such as Chechnya, Tuva, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria or Khakassia. In particular we are specialised in unrecognised countries, contested regions and separatist states such as Crimea, Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Karabakh. We also offer outstanding scheduled journeys to countries beyond the borders of the post Soviet land such as Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, Sudan and the Central African Republic.
Soviet Tours seeks to deliver unforgettable travel experience that goes way beyond the usual sightseeing. Our tours go straight to the core of the culture and traditions of the regions we work in giving you the exceptionally rare chance to get a first-hand insight into the complex and often misunderstood geopolitical issues defining the little-known and more or less recognised countries we'll take you to.
Of course, we won't forget to show you that the forgotten destinations in our portfolio do have a truly beautiful side too, in the classic and touristic sense of that term: most of the places we travel to could easily compete for the next top ten travel destinations in the world toppling first-class holiday hotspots such as Thailand or Brazil. Luckily the mass tourism industry hasn't yet discovered the hidden treasures of these isolated corners and you'll enjoy the precious feeling of being pretty much the only foreign visitors in the region.
Our motto is flexibility and we will help you to customise your tour or to design new routes from scratch according to your particular preferences and requirements. Our team of local and Western guides have an extensive knowledge of the regions they work in, exclusive contacts with local authorities and an unrivalled ability to solve complex problems; moreover they can all be legitimately labelled as prodigious polyglots as they are able to speak at least three languages fluently. Finally we also offer volunteer and language programs, which are truly unique in the former Soviet scenario and basically represent your only chance to get involved in a long-term project in the region.
Soviet Tours was proudly founded and is enthusiastically run by Berlin-based photojournalist, adventurer and travel author Gianluca Pardelli, whose reportages from the most diverse and remote backwaters of Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe have been featured in major newspapers and media outlets around the globe.
