Overnight stays by Japanese and Chinese tourists increased by over 40%.

 

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in July 2013 reached almost 747,000, which was 1.9% more than in July 2012, according to Statistics Finland. Overnight stays by resident tourists increased by 0.3% to a total of 2.3 million. The total number of overnight stays in July 2013 increased by 0.7% to more than three million.

Russian visitors were the largest group of foreign visitors in July with 168,000 overnight stays, which was an increase of 7.8% from the year before. Swedish visitors came next with 123,000 overnight stays, representing 7% growth. Germans were the third largest group with 84,000 overnight stays, which was 10.1% lower than in July 2012.

Strong growth in tourism from Japan and China

Overnight stays recorded for British visitors increased by 17.7% and totalled 28,000. Tourism from the Asian countries increased significantly in July 2013. Overnight stays by Japanese tourists increased by 46.5% to almost 24,000. Nearly 17,000 overnight stays were recorded for Chinese visitors, which was 44.5% more than one year before.

In terms of regions, the total number of overnight stays increased the most in Etelä-Savo, up by 15.7%, and in Kainuu, up by 9.7%. Overnight stays also increased by 6.9% in North Karelia and by 5.5% in Kymenlaakso. In July 2013, the average price of a hotel room was EUR 84.25 per day for the whole country, and the occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 59.4%.

In the period January – July 2013, the total number of nights spent at accommodation establishments in Finland was 12.4 million, which was 0.4% per cent less than during the same period in 2012.
