Construction work has started on a new hotel, which is to be the largest building in Scandinavia built solely of wood, and log holiday home village located in Imatra, eastern Finland, near the border with Russia. The City of Imatra has signed agreements with Kuusamo Hirsitalot, one of Finland’s largest log house and villa manufacturers, and Russian-owned companies for the development of the area which very close to the Imatra Spa.

The 29-room log hotel building is being built by the Russian-owned Finnish company Saimaatrast Oy. Imatra is one of the main border crossing points between Russia and Finland, and a popular destination for Russian tourists.

Finnish-Russian cooperation

Around 100 holiday homes will be constructed during the first phase of the project, consisting of buildings with two or four 100 square metre apartments available for rent. The holiday homes are also being developed by Russian-owned companies, while Kuusamo Hirsitalot is responsible for overseeing the project as a whole and for attracting investors.

The first phase of the construction work on the holiday home village is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. In addition to the holiday homes, the area will have a reception and shopping centre, café and restaurant services. The plans for the holiday village also include time share holiday homes in the future. When completed, the area will have 30,000 square metres of holiday accommodation.
