Kamakhya Devi Temple : the strange story of Menstruating Goddess

This article brings you the story of the most famous temple in India. Temples and Indian beliefs go hand in hand. Each temple has a historic story attached to it. But few of these stories are weird, strange, interesting and eye opening also. One such temple is Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam. This temple sits at the top of the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati.

Most interesting part of the temple

the most interesting part of the temple is that it doesn’t have any sculpture to worship. Instead there is a vagina of Devi Sati who was the first wife of Lord Shiva. This vagina is covered with a red silk sari. Here, comes the interesting part of the story. This temple is closed down for three days during monsoon because it is believed that the goddess is menstruating in these three days. To add to the belief and to make it sound more real, it is also said that the underground spring that flows in the sanctum of the temple becomes red in those three days of menstruation.

Prasad and give away

The red sari which is used to cover the vagina of the goddess is offered to the devotees. A piece of that red cloth is offered during those three days as Prasad to the worshippers. The temple reopens on the fourth day until then the Tantric fertility festival is celebrated in the city to honor the goddess and her fertile nature. People wait for these three days the whole year because it is strange and astonishing for them to believe that the real life situation is happening with the goddess also. The temple is worshipped and is one of the most famous spiritual places in India. If you are fascinated by the story, go visit the temple once.
